IN NEWS: A biodiversity technical body meets in Nairobi to gauge progress on the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework.
- The Subsidiary Body on Scientific, Technical, and Technological Advice (SBSTTA-25) is taking place between October 15 and 19, 2023.
- The SBSTTA-25 in Nairobi sets the scene for the task at hand: to meet the scientific, technical, and technological needs of parties in their efforts to move from agreement to action towards our common vision of living in harmony with nature.
About SBSTTA
- The Convention on Biological Diversity establishes an open-ended intergovernmental scientific advisory body known as the Subsidiary Body on Scientific, Technical, and Technological Advice (SBSTTA).
- SBSTTA is to report regularly to the COP on all aspects of its work.
- SBSTTA comprises government representatives competent in the relevant field of expertise.
- The SBSTTA has convened 23 times and has generated a total of 240 recommendations to the COP, with some of these recommendations being fully endorsed by the COP.
Functions
- Providing assessments of the status of biological diversity;
- Providing assessments of the types of measures taken in accordance with the provisions of the Convention;
- Responding to questions that the COP may put to the body.
